The first thing you notice is the horrific growth spilling out of her mouth — a sight that’s impossible to unsee, captured in a photo that breaks your heart and demands action. Adedayo can barely speak, her words muffled by the tumor that’s taken over her life. Yet behind her condition is a story of resilience, abandonment, and a desperate need for help.

Adedayo was just 15 when doctors at General Hospital Ikeja diagnosed her with mouth cancer in 2014. In Nigeria, where cancer often carries a stigma and late-stage diagnoses are all too common, Adedayo’s case is both rare and tragically familiar. Oral cancer typically strikes older adults, but for her, it came early, and without treatment, it’s grown into the monstrous burden you see today.

That’s a conservative estimate; private care could push it higher. For a young woman begging on the street and her grandmother, this is an unimaginable sum. Yet it’s the price of giving her a chance to speak, eat, and live without pain—a chance to reclaim her life.

I’ve reached out to hospitals and cancer centers in Lagos to confirm current surgery expenses, and we’re awaiting detailed quotes. But time isn’t on Adedayo’s side. Every day without treatment, her condition worsens, and her hope fades.

V Nigérii není neobvyklé, že prarodiče, jako je Monsura, vychovávají děti, když rodiče nezvládají situaci, zejména v chudých oblastech, jako je Igando. Adedayin otec nikdy nebyl přítomen a odchod její matky po novém sňatku odráží krutou realitu: nemoc může rozbít rodiny, zvlášť když chybí peníze. V Lagosu, megaměstě s 21 miliony obyvatel, žije dvě třetiny populace v chudobě, takže sousedé nemají co nabídnout.
